Mephisto is a next generation adserving platform. It has been designed from the ground up:
- for efficiency on commodity hardware using open source components
- using a distributed design that allows for unprecedented scalability
- primarily for adnetworks but it works equally as well with single site operations.
Mephisto adserver is written in Java. Mephisto allows publishers to place banners on their websites and then manage and optimise, deliver and track banner inventory.
The developers of Mephisto were all were part of the team that in 1997 set-up, SPACEAsia Media, the first pan Asian online adnetwork.
SPACEAsia was sold to NASDAQ listed CMGI in 2000 and re-badged as engage Asia, selling CMGI’s range of marketing and advertising solutions which included: Accipiter AdManager (now part of Microsoft Atlas), AdBureau, Adforce/Imgis (now rebrnaded as ADTECH which is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of AOL’s Advertising.com division), AdSmart, flycast, AdKnowledge, engage Media, i/Pro Analytics, MediaBridge and yesmail.
Following the dot com implosion of 2001 and the demise of engage, the core team of SPACEAsia / engage Asia reformed and started a new adnetwork called Activ8 Worldwide.
Mephisto was born out of a need for an adserving platform that would allow this new adnetwork to commence without the heavy burden of massive adserver license fees.
In April 2008 Activ8 Worldwide split in two:
- Activ8 Limited – which is the developer of the Mephisto adserving platform
- Oriented Media Limited – a full-service digital marketing company and subsidiary of Oriented Media Group which is a user of the Mephisto adserving platform.
